CWG-a pride or shame
Common Wealth Games are a treat to every competing nation. Its course is a great joy for nations and they feel prestigious to be a part of it.But the nation hosting it is at the peak of its prestige. The country's organization is what appreciated by people the most.
May be the world's outlook towards India of having potential to host any grand event successfully, has made common wealth committee to choose India to host CWG 2010.This was an another feather in India's glorious crown.Hosting a grand sporting event like CWG is a great pride for every nation. But the organization of these games have made Indians to repent on the decision of hosting CWG-which some of us call as a mistake.
Its preparations were initiated in great enthusiasm and vigor.Everything was going all right. Then the most popular saying 'MONEY corrupts' came true.Even the CWG organizers could't escape it.As more money was accumulated in the process,Indian politicians were lured towards it.Their intention was only to fulfill theit own self-interest.No one thought of country's pride.India had enough money to make this project a success, but all this went in vain because of political parasites. We are a fine country with some superb minds who are made to look like monkeys by some stupid and selfish rulers. They have tarred India's image.
Soon India started receiving notifications from abroad.Nations like Canada and New Zealand have even refused to participate in the games because of unhygeneic conditions around and within games' venue. Some countries even call it a total flop. The harshest criticism was made by Britain when it took the decision of staying in a hotel instead of 'Khelgram.'CWG news also got a bitter response on social networking sites.I was shocked to read people's comments there.A poll put to vote on TOI website got over 15,000 polls in just 8hrs.And 60% of them were against OC of CWG.
Fie on our country who became world idol in overthrowing colonial rule.If a country like South Africa, who got independence much later can host an event like FIFA World Cup(perhaps the biggest in the world)then why not India.
We can't help the present situation, but thinking optimistically India can host CWG in just satisfactory manner.Bad organization could've kept India away from hosting the games, but let's hope that the present things go well.Because 'something is better than nothing.'

ReplyDeleteWOW Omkar, you really have a good ability to analyze things and moreover to elaborate in such sentences that makes the reader feel never to stop reading. You have made a good study of CWG and OC.
ReplyDeleteBesides the language and the statistics you have put in your essay- this is obvious to be liked by everybody- i especially liked the title- Pride or Shame. I guess it is a pride but the way it is being handled is a SHAME. But yes again, it is a pride, when you do not consider dogs walking on beds, snakes crawling in the rooms where the athletes have to reside, shabby toilets and bathrooms which even we Indians dont feel like using(yes, when we Indians dont feel like stepping, foreigners cannot even imagine of such places ever on earth!!) and collapsing bridges!!
All that we need now is, as you said, an optimistic outlook more than anytime else. Let us hope the things will go fine, with no dogs or snakes poking in their noses, yeah at least fine, or we will have athletes running over fallen bridges, or games of dog- catching or snake- juggling introduced in the CWG for the first time in the history. Hail India!!
No, but its India, our land, land of gold, Ganga, Himalaya, things ought to go well!!
thanks Kzest
